happy valentine's day brownies

In my family, Valentine's Day was a special day because it was my Grandmother's birthday. Grandma was a feisty lady with a love for couture but I don't think she would have had much time for heart shaped nonsense. I on the other hand, decided to get into the swing of all things Valentine and bought some new heart shaped cookie cutters.

I made chocolate brownies which I then cut into heart shapes, inspired by this blog post I found on frolic.

The best thing about cutting out the heart shaped brownies was I got to eat the trimmings and there's nothing like squidgy chocolate brownies for breakfast after a cycle class at the gym.

Happy Valentine's Day to you all,

Jillian

    1. Hi Kathy,

Thanks for the nice comment. I've been using this brownie recipe for years http://recipefinder.msn.co.nz/article.aspx?id=823952 (there's a link now on the blog) but I've adapted it somewhat. I've reduced the flour to 1/2 cup and added 30 mls of unsweetened cocoa powder. Be careful not to over cook the brownies - the centre should still be a little damp when you test it. Sometimes I keep them plain, often I add toasted pecans but toasted macadamia nuts and raspberries are good as well.

      Good luck with them,

      J

I have recently moved to the country and now have an electric oven whereas before i had gas - I am finding it hard to get used to cooking with electricity as i feel it is a drier heat and just can't get the brownies right - any idea of what i can do?

    1. Hi Tricia,

I also cook with gas so I'm not sure how much help I'll be. When I cook at my parents place I use their St George fan forced electric oven. I switch off the fan and use only the bottom element when I bake. For the humidity, you could try putting a small ramekin of water in the oven while you bake.

      Hope that helps,

      Jillian
