Helsinki in black and white

When I flew into Helsinki I really had no idea what to expect as all I'd experienced before was a short lay-over at Vantaa Airport. I was blown away by the fabulous architecture and wanted to capture it all on black and white film.

It took me a few days to track down some film but once I did away I snapped. Actually when it comes to film photography I'm very careful about what I shoot, where I shoot and how I shoot.

Film is too expensive to waste, so I carefully compose and expose my images as I normally take just a single shot.

How do I choose what to capture in black and white?

Well really I think the image chooses to be photographed without colour.

Black and white imagery is pared back to basics, so is the perfect medium for story telling.

I was wondering if there was any interest in my running another lunchbox, a small group practical photography workshop? If so, could you let me know your interest and if there are enough of you, we'll try to work on some dates that suit. All the contact details can be found in the link.

It's been a very long week so I'm planning to be tucked up in my bed very early tonight. Have a great weekend and I'll be back again on Monday.

P.S Happy Father's Day Papa.

  1. Hi Jillian, I have just discovered your gorgeous post and loved spending time over my weekend looking at them. I would love to do a 'Lunchbox' session with you one day, but unfortunatley live in country NSW so it might be a while! I'll have to settle for trying a few of your recipies! I am looking into investing into a camera and was wondering if you could give me some advice? I am very much an amateur but once I had a play with a new camera I would like to take a course. I'm not going to use it for professional photography, I just want to learn to take some beautiful photographs. Is there a camera you could recommend for me? Thanks so much, and I look forward to following you blog... x

    1. Hi Sandra,

I only use Nikon cameras but all reputable brands make entry level SLR's if that's what you're after. There are plenty of online reviews to work out which camera suits your needs and what lens(es) you'd want or need. Then you'll need to either do lots of online reading and practice to pick up the basics of exposure or take a course at your local evening college. That's part one. Then you'll need to learn part two - how to post process the images and colour management. If you search through the blog I do give some tips on post processing.

If you need any more help it's probably best to email me on info@jillianleiboff.com and I'll do my best to help.

      Best wishes,

      J
